noneNOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT . . .

I hope this finds you in the midst of a great semester! These are truly stimulating times to be a member of VMATYC. I hope that if you have not already joined, you will give VMATYC membership serious consideration.

The VMATYC Executive Board held its fall meeting via Interactive Video at various locations around the state on Friday, September 10, 2010, 1:00—5:00 p.m.

The board discussed many issues including plans for the Fall Regional VMATYC Conferences and annual VMATYC Spring Conference in March, 2011.

The Board received reports from our standing Committees and Special Interest Groups.

As part of the DEIT report, Chris Allgyer stated that instructors are finding improvements in student performance in classes that they attribute to requiring on-line homework through systems such as MyMathLab and Aleks.

Richard Watkins has reported that the Developmental Studies Committee met at conference last spring. Their discussion centered on the Developmental Mathematics Redesign Proposal which has now moved into the implementation phase. Each college was to name a faculty representative to the VCCS Committee studying how to implement the proposals. Richard will continue using the VMATYC listserv to keep people posted on this topic. He has also updated the Developmental Textbook list.

Pablo Chalmeta submitted a report indicating that a revision of the MTH 178 course description for use in the VCCS Master Course File has been submitted to Bill Hightower of the VCCS. Bruce Wahl is continuing the work that has begun on revisions to the MTH 151 description.

Several of the Board members will be attending the Annual AMATYC Conference November 11 -14, 2010 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Towards the end of the board meeting Donna Jovanovich and Susan Wood from the VCCS "joined" us by telephone link to discuss the work of Developmental Math Redesign.

Please begin making plans to attend your regional fall conference as well as the spring conference. Each conference will include at least one session on the Developmental Math Redesign work. The sessions promise to be interesting and to include what are bound to be lively discussions!

What an exciting year it is to be involved in VMATYC!
