Western Region

The Western Regional VMATYC Group met on Friday, October 22, 2010 at Wytheville CC,
in Wytheville, VA. We had 19 attendees representing almost every school in our region.
During the meet and greet social time, we enjoyed casual conversation along with a delicious
lunch prepared by one of the local caterers.

Dr. Bill Hightower, formerly at the VCCS System office, and now a VP at Wytheville CC,
gave us a brief overview of the history of the DMRT and entertained a variety of questions
regarding the process and progress of the DMRT. There were also questions and discussion
relating to the current Curriculum Team and the work they are involved in.

Susan Fleming from Virginia Highlands CC gave us a demonstration on ALEKS, and
answered questions regarding her use of it in her courses.

Then Bill Feiss, Danny Whited, and Lisa Henley, all from South West CC, gave a
presentation entitled "How to Host a Math Contest For Your Area High School Students".
They graciously shared with the members' details on how they prepare for and conduct the
contests, as well as many of the documents and tests that they use.

There was a lot of lively discussion and interaction during each of the presentations, and all
attendees seemed to enjoy the afternoon together.
